Bonnet, durag or wave cap: which one to choose for your hair

The three pieces are made of satin, are worn on the head and serve to protect the hair. That is about all they have in common.

They do not stack and do not replace one another. Each answers a specific hairstyle, and picking the wrong one is the most common reason people conclude that “it does not work”.

Two other pieces have been added since and enter into this choice: the satin pillowcase, for anyone who does not want to wear anything on the head, and the heatless curler, which does not protect a hairstyle but creates one.

The difference in one line

• The bonnet envelops without compressing. It preserves volume.
• The durag compresses and adjusts to the centimeter. It holds a direction.
• The wave cap holds lightly, without ties and without adjustment. It is discreet.

Choose the bonnet if…

Your hair has volume to preserve. Defined curls, lengths, loose braids, locs, twists, Afro cut.

The deciding criterion is the width of the elastic band. A thin band creates a pressure point on the forehead and the bonnet ends up slipping backward in the middle of the night. A wide band spreads the tension and stays in place without leaving a mark.

Choose the durag if…

You have a short cut, you are working on 360 waves, you wear cornrows, or you want to protect a fresh cut.

One thing to understand before buying: the durag does not create waves. No durag does. The pattern comes from your brushing. The durag holds the direction the brushing gave and keeps a night of friction from erasing it. If the pattern does not take, look at your brush and your consistency before looking at the fabric.

Tying matters as much as the material: cross the ties above the front hairline, never on the forehead. It is the crossing that is too low that leaves a mark when you wake up, not the price paid. See the long-tail durag.

Choose the wave cap if…

You want something quick and discreet, during the day after brushing, or under the durag to spread the compression without overtightening.

It is the only one of the three that is worn under another piece. The bonnet and the durag, for their part, do not combine: they are two answers to two different hairstyles, not two layers to stack.

Choose the pillowcase if…

You cannot stand anything on your head at night, or your bonnet ends up on the floor when you wake up.

Its limit, stated frankly: it only protects what rests on it. The bonnet follows the head, the pillowcase does not. If you move at night, part of your lengths ends up outside the satin area.

Two sizes, to choose according to your pillow: 65 × 65 cm square or 50 × 75 cm rectangular. Colors: sand, black, pearl gray and white. Sold as a pair: €29.90 for the two pillowcases.

The case where none of these pieces is much use

If your hair is fine, straight and short, nighttime friction costs you little. You can wear one for comfort, but do not expect a visible difference. We prefer to write it here rather than let you find out after the purchase.

The benefit is greatest on fibers whose scales are naturally more open — coily, tightly curled, curly hair — and on the lengths, which are the oldest and most fragile part of the hair.

The heatless curler: in a category of its own

The previous pieces protect a hairstyle. This one creates one. It therefore replaces nothing: it is worn with the bonnet, not in its place.

It is a foam roll covered with fabric — it is not satin. The lengths are wrapped around it in the evening. Two scrunchies and a clip are provided to hold it in place. €10.90.

Should you have several?

One is enough if you only have one hairstyle. Two become useful for a prosaic reason: nighttime protection only works if it is done every night, and the night your piece is still drying after washing is a night without protection.

This is the only argument we have for the set, and it can be verified in your cart: €21.90 for three pieces, against €27.80 for the durag and the bonnet bought separately, wave cap not included. If you only want one piece, take it on its own. We will not push you.

Care, identical for the satin pieces

Hand wash in lukewarm water with a mild soap, or machine wash at 30 °C in a mesh bag. Air dry, laid flat. No tumble dryer, which deforms the elastics and the ties, and no iron directly on the satin.

Elastic loosens over time. This is normal, and it is the sign that the piece needs replacing: stretch it, and it should snap back firmly into place.
