Tying matters as much as the fabric. Here is the method that holds all night without marking your forehead.

1. Brush first. The durag holds a direction, it does not create it. Brush in the direction you want, on slightly damp hair or with a little styling cream.
2. Place the center seam in the middle of your head. It should follow the line from your nose to the nape of your neck. If it starts off crooked, everything else will follow.
3. Pull the ties backward while keeping the fabric flat, with no creases on top.
4. Cross them above the hairline, never on the forehead. It is this crossing too low that leaves a mark when you wake up.
5. Bring the ties to the front, tie a knot, then pass them behind again if the length allows. The knot should hold without compressing.
6. Fold down the back flap flat against the nape of your neck.

A durag that is tied correctly does not hurt. If you feel pressure after ten minutes, loosen it: excessive compression does not improve the hold, it only makes it uncomfortable.

Hand wash in lukewarm water with a mild soap, or machine wash at 30 °C in a mesh bag. Air dry, flat. Do not iron the satin directly, and avoid the tumble dryer, which deforms the ties.

Wash it regularly. A durag worn every night collects sebum and styling products, which end up being redeposited on clean hair.

No. It is polyester satin. Satin refers to a weave, silk to a material: so you can weave satin from polyester. It is cheaper, it can be machine washed, and it is written on the label. We explained the difference in this article.

Slightly damp, yes: that is even when brushing takes best. Soaking wet, no. The fabric does not dry underneath and prolonged dampness weakens the fiber.
