Satin is not a material

It is a weave. A way of interlacing threads to get a surface that is smooth and shiny on one side, matte on the other.

Satin can be woven from silk. It can also be woven from polyester, or from viscose. The weave is the same, the material is not.

What we sell

Maison Satinéa sells six products. Four are in polyester satin: the night bonnet, the long-tail durag, the 3-piece set and the pillowcase. It is written on the label of each piece, on each product page, and it is written here.

The fifth, the bedding set, is in viscose satin. Same weave, different fiber: viscose is plant-based and absorbs more moisture than polyester. On a bed that is comfort; on hair it is more of a drawback — which is why our bonnets stay in polyester. It is not silk either.

The sixth, the heatless curler, is not in satin. It is a foam roll covered with fabric. We would rather tell you on this page than let you find out when you open the package.

Many shops leave the doubt hanging. We prefer to clear it up before you pay.

Which product, which material

The curler: foam, not satin

The heatless curler is a flexible roll one meter long: a foam core with a fabric cover sewn around it. Two scrunchies and a clip come with it. It is not satin, and we will not write the opposite to make it look good.

This is not a problem here, because the curler is not what stays in contact with the pillow. You wrap the lengths of hair around the roll, then put the night bonnet on top. It is the bonnet, in satin, that limits friction during the night.

The curler is there to give shape. The satin is on the piece you wear over it.

The pillowcase: same satin, different object

The pillowcase is sold as a set of two, in the same polyester satin as the bonnets. The difference is not the material, it is the use: you do not wear it, you put it on the pillow, and it stays in place when the bonnet slips.

Two sizes, four colors: sand, black, pearl gray, white.

• 65 × 65 cm — the square, a common size in France.
• 50 × 75 cm — the rectangular, the other common size in France.

This is the point that causes trouble when you buy satin online: many pillowcases sold on the internet come in American dimensions, which match neither the French square nor the French rectangular size. The bedding set: viscose satin, 200 × 200 size

The bedding set is the only piece in viscose satin, 120 g/m². We offer only one duvet cover size, 200 × 200 cm, because it is the one that fits a standard two-person duvet exactly, the one for a 140 × 190 bed.

It comes in three pieces, or in four with a 230 × 250 cm flat sheet. Same four colors as the pillowcases: sand, black, pearl gray, white.

One thing to know before you order. The two pillowcases supplied with the set measure 48 × 74 cm. This is the standard North American size, and it matches no French pillow. We write it here as we do on the product page: if you want pillowcases that fit properly, ours are the ones, in 65 × 65 or 50 × 75 cm.

What it changes for you

• The price. A bonnet at €13.90 instead of several dozen euros.
• Care. Machine wash at 30 °C in a mesh bag, which is rarely possible otherwise.
• Durability. Polyester withstands repeated washing better.

How to care for your pieces

Hand wash in lukewarm water with a mild soap, or machine wash at 30 °C in a mesh bag. Air dry. Do not iron satin directly.

The pillowcase is washed the same way. So is the bedding set, machine washed at 30 °C in a mesh bag, delicate cycle, with no fabric softener and no tumble dryer — viscose wrinkles faster than polyester and does not like heat. The curler, however, cannot go in the machine: its fabric cover is cleaned by hand, in lukewarm water, and dried flat so the foam does not lose its shape.

Elastic stretches out over time: this is normal, and it is the sign that the piece needs to be replaced. Test it by stretching it; it should spring back firmly.
